Battle of the slugs – are you prepared?

5th September 2016

As the battle of the slugs gets into full flow, gardeners need to ensure their slug strategies go beyond the usual tactics of seasonal support as the deluge of slimy gastropods become a year-round problem. Mild winters have seen an increase in population and continual grazing which is taking its toll on bedding plants and new shoots. Whether gardeners are looking for a deterrent or a more permanent solution, Vitax has several options to keep slugs under control. A firm favourite amongst environmentally-conscious gardeners, Vitaxs Slug Gone is a highly effective natural barrier which deters slugs and snails away from plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables whilst also helping to aid the growth of plants through the slow release of nutrients. Supplied in pellet form, it does not contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, making it suitable for families with children or pets. Slug Gone is Soil Association approved and has secured the coveted British Wool logo, as well as being part of the Campaign for Wool. For gardeners looking for alternatives to a deterrent, Vitax has developed ferric phosphate-based, Slug Rid. An organic, ready-to-use pelleted bait, it is suitable for use around edible and ornamental plants. Fast-acting, slugs cease to feed after consuming the pellets, moving away from plants without leaving an unsightly trace. Slug Rid does not pose a risk to pets or children if used as directed.
